Making Mayo in My Vintage Kitchen

I did it I made my very own mayonnaise for my Whole30 Paleo diet.
It was easy.  So Easy!
You just need a couple of things.
A pretty apron of course!

The Cottage Workroom Barkcloth Apron

 First the recipe.

Simple Whole30 Compliant Mayo

1 1/4 Cups Extra Light olive oil (you don't want a strong tasting oil)
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt 
1/2 tsp Colman's Mustard powder
2 Tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

 A blender or food processor.

STEPS:
1. Plan ahead everything NEEDS to be room temperature so leave an egg out overnight.
2. In the blender whiz together the egg, 1/4 Cup of the olive oil, the salt, mustard powder and lemon juice until it is all mixed up.
3. Add the 1 Cup of Olive Oil. Slowly and I mean as slow as Molasses in January drizzle a very tiny stream of Olive oil into the mixture while the blender is whizzing away. This is a very important step and cannot be rushed if you want a nice thick mayo. It will take several minutes to trickle all the oil in.  
4. It will become thick as the last of the oil is going in. You can stop mixing when all the oil is in and it has thickened up.

Pour a very tiny drizzle of oil into the blender and really take your time with this step. I made mine in a shake blender.

So thick and creamy. I was AMAZED !

Store your mayo in the fridge in a glass jar.

Why make your own Mayo? Make it because it is so fresh, delicious, full of a healthy oil, a fresh egg and has no sugar, no starch, no artificial anythings to mess up your Whole30. It is next to impossible to find this even in the best health food store. The cost is much less too. Plus you get to dance around your own kitchen shouting I did it, I made it, It's Amazing!

Projects Completed

I finished the Shabby Chic shelf.  The white paint looked lonely so I added some color. At first I was going to glue some pretty paper onto the inside of the little cubbie holes, but I decided to use my favorite blue paint.

I am happy with the result.  All in all it was 3 coats of paint in most areas.  I distressed it with a really gritty sand paper here and there and then waxed with paste wax.  It is in my etsy shop ...Shabby Cottage Chic here
Yesterday when I was on the way to work I was lucky enough to have time to stop at a neighborhood rummage sale. 

I found so many great items. If course I love the chippy white paint on this corner shelf, but I also fell hard for some mushrooms.

When I was a new bride in 1972 my kitchen was all orange and brown and mushrooms were popping out all over the place.  Now it is vintage.

This collection of thread was begging to go home with me. 
I love community tag sales.

Since the white and blue shelf was last weeks finished project I think I will also show the last plate of corned beef and cabbage I will ever cook.

It looks so yummy, but the salt and the spices and the way we had to air out the house for 2 DAYS!!!!  Not doing this again. I will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with green beer next year.

Picking Up the Needles

As if arthritis wasn't enough to make me slow down knitting this summer...the colonoscopy socks were. link  I didn't read ahead into the pattern. They are tube socks. No heal to turn = NO FUN just 16" of tube and then a toe.  Well those are nicely stashed in their bag until another trip to the Dr's or hospital brings them back out.
I saw this on Facebook the other day and I had to steal it.

I have some items that are being moved over from Weelambieknits.  The majority of this little shop will be devoted to fingerless gloves and cowls.  I love making these.  No Wee will not be having a 'sock' section anytime soon.

Quilt Estate Find

I found this beautiful quilt at an estate sale yesterday.  Now I am trying to identify the pattern. When I first looked at it I thought it might be a Hawaiian quilt pattern as it is such a tropical color and has the all over one color on white look. I don't know much about quilts.  I used to. Sadly have forgotten much of what I did know and my mother would help me with this, but well Mom is gone off to quilter's heaven.

A friend on Etsy has found two possibilities.  Star of the West and Star Crescent.  I think it is some variation of these.  I love how the compass is rounded in between the four diamond pieces.

It is large approx. 6 x 6'
The quilting is tiny. There are at least 12 stitches to the inch and it is quilted all over. The back being just as pretty as the front.  I think I have to look at it for a while before I part with it and list it in my ship.

Another friend on Etsy thinks it is a variation of Star Crescent or Compass Rose. Either way the beauty and fun of quilting is the endless variation and design between block patterns, color, fabric, applique' and quilting techniques.

Trends Colors Seasons

Plenty of time and money are spent on advertising.
One of the prime movers is color.  It always gets your attention. Color is known to change moods, calm or excite.  Color reminds us of smells, of seasons, color seperates and unites us.
Etsy has been part of the trend to feature colors as ways to shop.  Tags often include the color for search engines.
The new fall trend colors have fancy names for colors that we all know and maybe will look at in a new way if the new name grabs us.
Pink Flambe' is one such name. It is marketing dripping in pink.
You tell me if you like it.  I have tried it on a vintage jewelry box I have upcycled.

Tootsie Got Mail

Tootsie got a package in the mail today.  It came all the way from China.

Just what she needed.  Sealed shut in a plastic bag.  Wonder why it was all damp inside?  Do mannequin hands sweat?  Spooky...

The hand arrives!  Washed off and dried it began to want to do things...like play with everything on the desk!  Now that Tootsie has opossable thumbs I had better start hiding and locking things.

Dress Up

Tootsie came out of her hiding spot in the closet today to play dress up.  I have this vintage desinger dress in my Etsy shop that hasn't been getting noticed.  It was time for some new pictures.

Tootsie was eager to unzip the side zipper and squeeze into this hot number.  Then the real fun began.  Tootsie wanted to try different styles using jewelry.

She wasted no time getting into my bureau and grabbing the sliding tray full of jewels out so she could play with them on the bed.  The last time this dress was photographed it was with pearls.  Tootsie examined them, but dropped them fast in favor of a Boho look using some mismatched pieces from my Etsy Shop's stash.

Layering purple and pink beads wasn't enough for Tootsie.  She dug deeper and came up with this heavy silver and black pendant.

Not completely satisfied Tootsie tried a combination of white and silver beads with gold chains and layered a necklace of pink gemstones.

 

By now Tootsie was feeling a bit like having a relaxing time on the chaise lounge and  drinking a sloe gin fizz ...

Shabby Cottage Chic Jewelry Box

Shabby Cottage Chic...what it looks like to me...
decorating in soft tones...lots of white...vintage....chippy... distressed wood....worn and loved fabrics....greens....blues....pinks....browns....all the pretty soft colors of a spring day misted over with dew and soft sunlight.

Sea Breeze Blue jewelry box... black velvet lining...lots of storage room for all your favorite jewels.
This box is a heavy wooden box from the 1980's that I found at a thrift shop.  I love the black velvet lining and the heavy black wrought iron handles and latch. 
It has been upcycled by me and painted with this lovely soft blue paint.  I sanded and then waxed it with bees wax by hand to bring out a soft satin patina.

Packaging and Shipping for Etsy Shop

Everything is always in the details.
Wrapping and packaging your Etsy parcels is no different.  Being the proud owner of an Etsy buisness means you wear many hats. This post is about wrapping and shipping.
I love to wrap packages and make them pretty.  This is no different from wanting to open beautifully wrapped packages. Time and budget have to be considered.  Wrappings are expensive and hard on the evironment.  I recycle every possible thing I can to wrap parcels.  Boxes I get from work.  When shipping US Priority Mail the USPS provides the boxes.  I save and reuse bubble wrap and styrofoam.  I also collect these from work and recycle them. 
Making labels and hang tags will use up bits of card stock, paper, greeting cards, ribbons, stamps, stamp pads, tape, lace....limitless really.  I have seen lovely hang tags made from slivers of wood and from sea shells.

Wrapping paper is another area where recycling plays a key role for me.  I save wrapping papers, and tissue papers of all types.  I save bits of ribbon and lace. I buy new tissue paper from the Dollar Store when I have to.  I also buy used sewing patterns at garage sales and thrift shops.  The vintage patterns that haven't been cut I can sell!  The ones that have been cut or are not vintage I use for wrapping.  Sewing patterns make lovely wrapping paper and the little cut out bits are great for stuffing boxes along with bubble wrap.  News papers can be used for stuffing also but they are a bit heavier and you have to consider the weight against the cost of buying bubble wrap or paying more for postage.

Wrapping a box within a box! Weigh everything!  In this huge box is a large Shabby Chic shelving unit.  It was wrapped in Pattern paper and given a hang tag and lovely satin ribbon.  Then the corners were all wrapped with cardboard for further protection. I stuffed crumpled newspapers around the whole lot and used miles of tape.  I get wide celephane tape at the Dollar Store.  Stapping tape is used in the corner spots and outside seams of the box.  It is more expensive and used judiciously. 

Buying a good scale was the smartest thing I did for my buisness.  It was surprisingly not very expensive.  I got mine on Ebay.  It is easy to use and I can weigh up to 50 pounds with it. 
Postage can be purchased on line as well.  I use the USPS or Paypal.  I also print my customs forms online.  It was all a bit tricky at first.  Having a scale has taken lots of running back and forth to the post off ice out of my day (and my husband's) and makes quoting prices so much more accurate.
So here we have wrapping and shipping. It is a lot of work.  Make it enjoyable and be kind to the environment and your bottom line by recycling.  My husband helped me wrap that big box up there.  He made a suggestion later on in the day.  He has a way of doing this.  He starts out with, "if I may make a suggestion..." His was to make and ship smaller projects!  I agree, but if another wonderful wooden shelf or table makes it's way to me I would find it very hard to pass it up.
I also ment to tell you my mother taught me to save wrapping paper.  She also taught me to iron it and the ribbons when you use it the second time round!
