Thrifting 

My favorite past time on a Saturday morning.
I found lots of goodies today.  The shops are all having 50% off sales so that made it even more fun.

I love finding books.

The Illustrations are amazing.
This story book Homer Price by Robert McCloskey the author of Make Way For Ducklings is filled with great drawings.  I remember this donut shop story from childhood.

The Wind In The Willows ....filled with color illustrations.

This little toothpick holder caught my eye.

I love that little bird and wishbone!

Lots of brass and shiny objects caught my eye as well.

Little copper pans, a brass pear, filigree gold mirror, copper candlestick.....

It was all lots of fun and I got this great pink cotton purse to use for a knitting project bag.

This one is all mine!

Once again the top of my dining room table is hidden.

The table still has the extra leaves in it from Christmas.  All covered up now!

It was a fabulous morning!

What Is A Firkin ?

So what's a firkin anyway?
I found a great looking wooden bucket with a cover when I was out thrifting the other day. I researched my find as I always do prior to listing it.  
Turns out it is a firkin.

According to Merriam Webster a firkin is: 
1. a small wooden vessel or cask.
2. any of various British units of capacity usually equal to 1/4 barrel.
The first being used to store items in the pantry like sugar. 
The second definition being far more popular with beer drinkers.

Now if someone would help me find out what this is.  It has been in my families possession for generations. I have no idea what it is.  

My ancestors built wooden boats.  So what is this relic?  I want to think if it isn't an actual tool of some kind that it is a toy.  I imagine a little boy watching his father working in his boat shop and making this small toy to occupy himself.  The nails are hammered in at odd angles and bent over.  I plan to keep this for future befuddled generations.

Saturday Treasure Hunts & Knitting

I have a three day weekend. This is such a pleasure. I meant to get up early and go thrifting. Of course I slept in and then had lazy Saturday am coffees at home.  The happy result of this was getting to an Estate sale late at the half way point. This is when they throw everyone out of the house and make you line up all over again. Then when they allow you back in everything is half off.

I think they really use this time while we are broiling outside to run to the bathroom and eat their lunches.  Running a busy Estate Sale is a lot of hard work.  

The wait was well worth it.  I went home with a full trunk of goodies.

 I hope tomorrow is a nice sunny day so I can take pictures on the lanai. 

~Knitting Right Brain vs Left Brain...my thoughts~
After a fun day of shopping I am ready to sit and relax with my knitting.
I have planned to try and make a lace scarf for well decades. I have started so many lace projects only to have them land in the frog pond.  I am going to blame it on my right brain vs left brain thought process.  Knitting is a visual pleasure (right brain). Counting lace patterns and looking at charts is analytic (left brain).  I have discovered I have no left brain. Ha! 

No Fuss Shade Loving Shawl

I also have a very hard time seeing that tiny itty bitty thread of lace weight yarn. I found a very simple pattern No Fuss Shade Loving Shawl I think despite all my problems I will be able to pull this one off. I hope so as the yarn Silky Alpaca Lace that I bought on Webs summer sale is really soft and lovely.

Plans and Projects

My weekends are just not long enough for all I want to do.  
I got precious little done today on my shabby chic projects. 

I have several projects to work on and so far only these two have seen any paint.  It was a beautifully sunny day. The temp was 72 degrees and the wind was blowy.  I had paint flying all over the blue table. Tomorrow I will be able to start sanding and waxing these two pieces.  That is my favorite part of the process in creating shabby chic pieces. 

I love the detail on this wooden shelf and can't wait to finish it. 

While I am showing off this pretty carved wood let me show you what I have been finding at yard sales. Tools!  I love old tools. Look how pretty these are.

The feel of the wooden handles and the glints of paint, rust, sweat, oil, and patina of use on these old pieces really makes them beautiful. 

Today I found some vintage embroidery hoops.  I love collecting these.  They will soon be available in my supplies section of my etsy shop. here

This last wooden hoop has no spring or screw tension device. I haven't seen one like this before. Who ever owned it put lace trim and string around the inside hoop to give it more 'grip' I think. The wood is smooth as silk.

Thrift Shopping Junkie

Thanks to hubby for driving me all over Venice this am. We caught 3 great thrifts!  One a church tag sale and two Mobil Home Park Sales. Elbow to elbow and dodging rain drops to get in the doors.  These sales are mobbed. I even went a little later in the morning just so the crowds would die down a bit.  I always find something that nobody else saw as the top layers are sold off first leaving some rare beauties for me!
For my self I bought a hand made project bag from the sweetest little lady in a mobile home park.  Perfect for the knitting I am doing for my next grand baby who is due to arrive four weeks from today!

I wish I had gotten more of these cute bags now.  They also had homemade molasses cookies at this sale. I can't show you them. I ate them all up in the car.  Soft chewy and so so good. 

It just makes good sense to buy baskets. Love these two produce baskets and loved filling them up with more things to buy.  The sifter is small and very sweet.  The books will go to Mya's house tonight. 

Gorgeous shabby chic shelf with tons of detail.

I found this very old framed mirror with some kind of floral painting on it.  Can't wait to get a better look at that beauty. 

Wonder if any one wears bed jackets any more.  It would be fun to wear on Mother's Day for breakfast in bed!  All blue frothy chiffon, lace and satin ribbons.  

Oh I really wish I had shopped more at the bake sale table.

Car Knitting

Nothing to do?  Take up car knitting.  Makes the traffic less of a problem.  Just don't knit and drive.

I bet you had snow to look at today.  We on the other hand.... here in Florida got to go to a great party at this beautiful backyard pool and hang out with the best Shepherd Mix pooch in Sarasota

Wait I'm not done having fun yet.  First thing this morning we went to the most fabulous tag sale at a mobile home park here in Venice.   I shopped and Skip carried the boxes.  It was spectacular. I hated to leave.

Now that was a fun day.
I do miss snow.

Doll Clothes

I finally bought a cabbage patch doll at Good Will today.  She almost tumbled into my wagon.  I had to take her home.  All she had were pink satin panties on.  Her little knobby belly button naked to the world.
Now she has a cozy sweater.

Knitting for dolls is so much fun.  Unlike your children you can keep hunting til you find one that actually fits into your creation...

She is pretty sweet in that funny Cabbage Patch way.  Now I need a name for her.
