Southwest Of Forever

When I was a kid I lived on the coast of New England. My Uncle David had left the north east for Arizona when he was 18 years old. This was back in the very early 1930's. He had terrible asthma and needed that dry climate to survive.  Every year he sent us the magazine Arizona Highways.  I poured over those pages. The photos are amazing. It kindled a life long love and desire to explore the Southwest.

Lately I have been searching for silver jewelry from the Southwest. I have some family pieces that were passed down to me from my Mother.  Silver jewelry accented with turquoise and other gem stones were widely made by Native American's and sold at Trading Posts. In the 1930's when my Grandmother traveled there to visit David she brought home quit a lot of lovely pieces.
I will leave the details to the experts as there are many. I would like to share some pieces I have found around Etsy.

I love this roadrunner! They just make me smile and this would look great on my cowl.

I Know That Face

I was out thrift shopping on Saturday and I ran across a face that I just couldn't resist.
Sad Hound Dog
I had seen that face before. In fact I see that face everyday.
My Sad Faced Angie
Always begging for a hand out.
One collectible figurine was not enough on Saturday. I also saw these cute little salt and Pepper shakers.
Roosters
The lady in the thrift shop wished she had seen the roosters first. She collects them.  She also told me they bring good luck. I had never heard that, but apparently it is a reason for the proliferation of rooster decor.  I just always thought they were cute.

Sorry can't put up a link for Angie girl. She is a keeper.

"Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind."

What Is A Firkin ?

So what's a firkin anyway?
I found a great looking wooden bucket with a cover when I was out thrifting the other day. I researched my find as I always do prior to listing it.
Turns out it is a firkin.

Firkin

According to Merriam Webster a firkin is:
1. a small wooden vessel or cask.
2. any of various British units of capacity usually equal to 1/4 barrel.
The first being used to store items in the pantry like sugar.
The second definition being far more popular with beer drinkers.
my ... firkin

Now if someone would help me find out what this is.  It has been in my families possession for generations. I have no idea what it is.

My ancestors built wooden boats.  So what is this relic?  I want to think if it isn't an actual tool of some kind that it is a toy.  I imagine a little boy watching his father working in his boat shop and making this small toy to occupy himself.  The nails are hammered in at odd angles and bent over.  I plan to keep this for future befuddled generations.
What do you think?

Who Is That?

Anyone who takes photographs seriously knows how hard it is to keep. out. of. the. picture.
I have been doing a lot of Etsy listings and Etsy Photos lately.

I hate it when things jump into the frame that don't belong there.

Exactly ! Twist and turn all you want you're in the shot. SHOOT.

Get your silly self out of the shot and suddenly the ceiling and the back yard are volleying for exposure on primetime.

I settled for the backyard and cropped it like Edward Scissor Hands.

What to do with the back ground is just as tough. Most of my photos are taken on the lanai. The light is pretty good out there. I use a huge section of white vinyl for my back drop. It is easy to lighten and makes the photos clean. Etsy seems to just love white back drops.
My preference is rustic.  So I venture out and take pictures on the back yard fence.
Backyard Fence.
Mr Weelambie made me a shelf on the fence. He painted it white to please Etsy.  That is where some things get their mug shots.

My shabby little step ladder is another possibility.  The problem with it is what will show up in the frame behind it.

Today I found some old weathered boards at an abandoned gas station in town. I am loving the look they offer and the large level area to set things up.  I put them on the lanai.

This photo better shows how large this area is, at least 4 feet.

We are now having our evening monsoon and thunder concert so I am finishing this .  I hope I don't get in trouble for making those abandoned boards mine.  Fingers Crossed.
